The Track Plan

So...now I've got a 41" x 76" blank "canvas". Time to plan the RR mainline.

Q: What do I want to include in my RR?
A: Continuous running with stub end sidings (both facing and trailing), a passing siding, lots of buildings and industries & a passenger station.

Q: What else?
A: Water for boats and barges, several bridges, an interchange siding connection on each end and varying geography with a hill above grade level and a cut below it.

Q: Anything else?
A: Yes. DCC locomotive control & remote control turnouts grouped together in a control panel on the front of the layout.

With all of that in mind, here is what I'm going with:

On the left, you'll see a viaduct over a cut to be carved from the foam in that corner of the RR. A stub end siding, to be extended to an interchange track later on, is nearby. Just to the right is a passing siding, with two stub end sidings to the right of that. In the middle - centerpiece of the layout - is Lake Metallikahmish (A bastardization of the bands name "Yeaaaaahhhhh?!!! Ooooooohhhhhhh!!!! " and the multiple towns named after Indian Peoples {-Mish} in the Pacific Northwest.)

At the center of the layout at the back will be a non-operating drawbridge - with a smaller bridge at the front. The right hand side of the layout (Left is North, Right is South) holds two more stub end sidings and a second interchange connection. At the top of the plan you'll see elevations. The RR mainline is all level at 3", with the cut at 0" (built on the plywood beneath the foam) and the hill on the South side of the layout at 9" (two layers of foam atop the foundation 3" layer). There will be a narrow street with houses & buildings running along the ridge and a tunnel cutting through it in the back corner...

Next Time: Track Laying & Power Up
